Welcome to The Quilt Haus Blog!

The quilting industry is changing with the times and so are we!  I love that you can walk into our shop and feel the newness of knowledge and the respect of history of all different types of Quilters and Artists!  Yes, we are no longer just "quilters", the younger generation has brought a new fresh look at the world of quilting, giving it more of a "art" look coupled with traditional quilting.  It is the traditional and the new that makes quilting so exciting in this new era!

Recently Deanne, our Quilt Shop owner hired two young college students.  I have to admit I was a little jealous interviewing them knowing that one a senior and the other a junior at Texas State has the whole world in front of them.  A whole changing world in the quilt industry.   In our next post, you will meet Sam and Edward, two young college students with gleam in their eyes and an ambition to learn from our traditional view of quilting while adding their own flare to our quilting world.

Thanks, Deanna, for your response. I found it very helpful. I'd like to get a quilt hoop or frame. What do you recommend?

Honestly, pre-washing isn't very common in this area. Seems to be a regional thing. Iffy colors are intense reds and blues, mainly - many people will check those for bleeding. If you do want to prewash, the method you described works well. The Quilt Haus has some amazing prints from the same line (Treetop Fancy) that the bird kit was from - many would make fabulous backs. And finally, I'd use a good midweight cotton batting, or a cotton/poly blend for sending the quilt north. The quality of the batting dictates whether the planned quilting is sufficient. The batting package will tell you how far apart you can quilt (range is from 2-12" on different types).

I have some questions about a quilt kit. First, what about prewashing? read that to avoid distortion of size soak like colors in cold water and dry on a flat towel. Has anyone tried this. Second, what backing is recommended for the yellow/pink/brown bird kit by creative solutions. Third, will quilting on my sewing machine be suffociwnt to hold the batting in place. I was thinking of sewing along the seams. lastly, what would be a good weight for the batting for a quilt to be used on the cold winters of Colorado?
