The Pyrmont Stay

Regulatory note

What the appointed manager means for a stay at The Star Sydney

If you are planning a room, spa day or dinner at The Star Sydney, the regulatory wording around the casino can feel separate from the stay you are trying to arrange. This note keeps to what has been published: the casino licence status, the appointed manager, and the hotel, restaurant and spa operations that guests can still request.

Note · 20 October 2026

The published status, without adding to it

The Star Sydney's casino licence remains suspended (since 2022). NICC (25 September 2026): the Minister amended the Casino Control Regulation 2019 to extend the term of the manager, Nick Weeks, until 30 June 2027; 'Mr Weeks will continue to hold the casino licence for The Star Pty Limited ... allowing the casino to continue operating gaming facilities while its licence remains suspended.' The Star ASX notice (25 Sep 2026): 'the Manager's appointment for The Star Sydney casino has been extended to 30 June 2027, unless terminated earlier by the NICC.' NICC notes The Star 'is still awaiting the outcome of the civil proceedings brought against it by AUSTRAC in the Federal Court'. Other 2026 NICC items (titles): 'NICC issues The Star Sydney $10 million in fines and enforceable undertaking' (2 June 2026); 'Casinos fined for allowing minor to enter their venues' (19 Aug 2026, Crown Sydney and The Star Sydney); 'The Star manager's term extended for further six months' (1 April 2026).

For a guest reading hotel pages, that sentence is the important boundary. It says the casino licence is suspended, and that the appointed manager continues to hold the licence during the term stated by the regulator. It does not say that the hotels, restaurants or spa are closed.

This site does not read beyond those notices. We do not infer a date for any future change, and we do not treat the manager’s term as a review of the hotel rooms, dining rooms or spa treatment rooms. If you want the broader setting before you choose a room, start with the full review, then use this note as the regulatory context.

What remains relevant to hotel and spa guests

The Star Sydney remains the address for two published hotel choices: The Darling and The Star Grand. The Darling publishes categories including The Darling Rooms, Jewel Suites, Adored Suites, Stellar Suites and Penthouses. The Star Grand publishes Superior King Room, Superior Twin Room, Premium Suite, Royal Suites, Star Suites and Penthouses. The Star Grand Residences also publish apartment-style suite categories, including one-, two- and three-bedroom options.

Room counts need care. The Star Grand page publishes “309 luxuriously appointed deluxe rooms, suites and penthouses”. For The Darling, the pages we could reach do not publish a verified room count; secondary sources give figures, but the site’s own pages do not confirm one. For that reason, we do not print a number for The Darling in our room guidance. The same approach appears on our rooms and suites page.

The spa remains part of the hotel proposition. The Darling Spa is published as being on Level 2 at The Darling, with treatment rooms, two couples suites, a steam room, a spa jacuzzi, a boutique gym and a relaxation or tea lounge. The published spa hours conflict between official pages, so hours vary and you should check directly with the spa before shaping your day around a treatment. For a spa-led stay, see The Darling Spa.

The pool detail also sits with the hotel facilities rather than the casino notice. The Darling publishes a 25-metre outdoor pool on Level 5, open daily and heated to 26 degrees. The Star Grand publishes a harbour-view pool and its gym and pool hours on Level 5. If the pool is central to your stay, read the pool note before you pack.

Restaurants, bars and the surrounding stay

The dining pages remain useful for a guest planning the non-gaming parts of the property. The published restaurants include Sokyo, BLACK Bar & Grill, Cucina Porto, Eat Ozzo, Harvest Buffet, Rumble, G&Tea, Fat Noodle, Food Quarter, 24/7 Sports Bar and the food court names listed by the venue. The bars published by the property include 24/7 Sports Bar, Cherry, Rock Lily, Jade Rabbit, Black Bar, Sokyo Bar and G&Tea. If your stay is arranged around dinner rather than a room category, our restaurants page keeps those names and cuisines in one place.

For arrival and movement, the practical facts are also unchanged in the material we have checked. The address is 80 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont NSW 2009. The L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line stops at The Star, and the F4 Pyrmont Bay ferry service stops at Pyrmont Bay Wharf, described by Sydney Lyric as a five-minute walk. Car park entrances are published for 55 Pirrama Road and 2 Edward Street, with a 2.0 metre height limit. The Star Express Coach is described as temporarily suspended. These details sit in our guide to getting there by light rail and ferry.

There is also the surrounding harbour stay to consider. The property is in Pyrmont on Darling Harbour, and the Sydney Lyric is within The Star. Those details matter if you are choosing a room for a theatre night, a dinner booking or a slow morning by the water. They do not change the wording of the casino licence status; they simply sit beside it as the parts of the stay you can plan now.

How to use this note before you request

Use the manager status as a piece of context, not as a room category. If you want the quietest possible stay, ask for dates, preferred hotel and room type, and any room-position preference the hotel can consider, such as a harbour side or a higher floor. Do not treat those preferences as promises; the hotel has to confirm what is available.

If the spa is the reason for the stay, ask for the treatment timing first and let the room follow that plan. Because the official pages give inconsistent spa hours, a spa stay works best when the treatment, check-in time and dinner are checked together. You can use the official site for the hotel and spa at star.com.au/sydney, or send a request through this desk if you want the stay shaped before a booking is confirmed.

This website is independent of The Star Sydney. It does not provide casino access, does not take casino transactions, and does not offer online casino play. The casino is a physical venue at the property. For the purpose of this page, the useful point is simple: the regulator’s published status concerns the casino licence, while the hotels, restaurants and spa continue to be the parts of the property a room or spa guest can plan around.
