Responsible gambling information for a stay at The Star Sydney

This site is about choosing a room, a spa stay, a meal, a show night or a quiet base in Pyrmont. The casino is a physical venue at The Star Sydney, not something you can access through this website. If gambling is part of your visit, the NSW rules and support pathways should be clear before you arrive.

What this page covers

The Star Sydney sits at 80 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont NSW 2009, with two hotels on site: The Darling and The Star Grand. Our pages are written for hotel and spa planning, including rooms and suites, The Darling Spa, the pool, restaurants, bars and Darling Harbour.

The casino is part of the property, but it is not the purpose of this site. We do not provide online casino play, account sign-up, gaming instructions or gambling promotions. Australia bans online casino play under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, and the venue discussed here is a physical building only.

Casino entry in NSW is restricted to adults. The Star’s published wording is: “Guests must be aged 18 years or over to enter the casino.” Before entering, you may be required to provide acceptable proof of age showing you are at least 18, and The Star may retain ID it suspects is forged or falsified.

If your stay is for the spa, pool, dining, Sydney Lyric or Darling Harbour, you can plan it without entering the gaming areas. The request form on this site is for accommodation and spa-stay enquiries only.

The regulator and current licence status

NSW casinos are overseen by the NSW Independent Casino Commission, known as the NICC. The regulator says it “plays a vital role rebuilding public trust in the NSW casino industry through visible and robust supervision”. Liquor & Gaming NSW regulates liquor, wagering, gaming and registered clubs in NSW, and lists the NICC as a related body.

NICC release “The Star manager’s term extended into 2027” (25 September 2026): the Minister for Gaming and Racing amended the Casino Control Regulation 2019 to extend the term of The Star Sydney’s manager, Nick Weeks, until 30 June 2027; Mr Weeks continues to hold the casino licence for The Star Pty Limited while its licence “remains suspended”.

That sentence is included here as regulatory context, not as a hotel verdict. The hotels, restaurants and spa are covered separately in the full review, and the manager status is set out in more detail in our note on what the appointed manager means for guests.

Support and self-exclusion in NSW

GambleAware is the NSW Government gambling support service. The published NSW helpline is 1800 858 858, and The Star self-exclusion information describes it as available 24/7. If you are worried about your own gambling, or someone else’s, that is the support number to use.

The Star publishes a casino “Voluntary Exclusion” pathway. The FACTS we could verify list an online form, or help through a Casino Host at a Guest Service Desk, a Security Officer at a gaming-area entrance, or Guest Support Managers on 0418 881 420. For hotels and clubs, NSW also has an online multi-venue self-exclusion system, often shortened to MVSE. For online wagering, the national register is BetStop.

Self-exclusion is not a hotel booking tool. It is a protective step for people who need a barrier between themselves and gambling venues or products. If you are staying at The Star Sydney and have a self-exclusion arrangement in place, contact the relevant support service or the venue directly before you travel so the boundaries of your stay are understood.

Signs to take seriously

Gambling harm does not always announce itself loudly. Warning signs can include spending more than planned, hiding gambling from people close to you, borrowing to continue, chasing losses, missing work or study, or feeling anxious when you cannot gamble. A hotel stay can also change ordinary routines, so it is sensible to set boundaries before you arrive.

Practical limits can be simple: decide where you will and will not go inside the property, keep your room and dining plans separate from gaming areas, and travel with someone who understands your boundaries if that is helpful. If you are arranging a restorative stay, the more relevant pages are likely to be The Darling Spa, the pool, restaurants and Darling Harbour.

We do not suggest gambling as a reason to visit The Star Sydney. If casino access would make the stay unsafe or uncomfortable for you, consider whether another Sydney hotel would be more suitable.

How our request desk handles this

The Pyrmont Stay is independent of The Star Sydney. The request desk exists to help you ask for a room or spa stay, then direct the enquiry to the appropriate hotel or booking partner. It does not take card details, it does not open gaming accounts, and it does not arrange casino access.

If you use the form, ask for what you need in plain language: dates, adults, preferred hotel, room category if known, and whether the stay is centred on The Darling Spa, restaurants, Sydney Lyric or the harbour. You can also say if you prefer a quieter room location, although allocation is always subject to the hotel’s confirmation.

For more about the desk, read about The Pyrmont Stay or see how this site earns. If your next step is a room or spa enquiry, go to request a room or spa stay.

Your dates, our desk

Send your dates and whether you want The Darling, The Star Grand or a spa stay; the desk confirms availability and the current rate by email, usually within one working day. No card details here.

Nothing on this site costs the reader anything: when a room or spa request sent from here becomes a confirmed stay, the hotel or the booking partner pays us a commission.

Received. The desk will email you the room, the spa options and the rate.
