Pyrmont review
The Star Sydney, reviewed for rooms, spa days and show nights
At 80 Pyrmont Street, The Star Sydney works as a compact stay: two hotels, a spa, a pool, restaurants, bars, a theatre and Darling Harbour close by. You are not choosing a resort in isolation. You are choosing how you want to use Pyrmont, the light rail, the water and the rooms above it.

First sense of the address
The Star Sydney sits at 80 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont NSW 2009, with its hotel, dining, theatre and casino uses gathered into one precinct. The address is practical rather than remote: the L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line stops at The Star, and ferries from Circular Quay stop at wharves a few minutes’ walk away. Sydney Lyric material says the F4 Pyrmont Bay service stops at Pyrmont Bay Wharf and is a five-minute walk.
Arrival by car is more managed. The published car park entrances are Main Entrance, 55 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont, and Members Entrance, 2 Edward Street, Pyrmont. Vehicles over 2.0m are not accepted in the car park. Bicycle parking is published on Level P3 via Pirrama Road, and Uber pick-up zones are listed at Pyrmont Street, by the Star Grand entrance, and Harbourside, by the Pyrmont Bay exit. For a practical route summary, use our page on getting there by light rail and ferry.
The first decision is not only how to arrive, but which hotel to ask for. The Star Sydney publishes two main hotel choices on site: The Darling and The Star Grand. They share the same address, but they read differently. The Darling is the more spa-led choice, with its own gym inside the spa. The Star Grand gives you published room categories that run from Superior rooms through suites and penthouses, with its own Level 5 pool and gym. If you are still choosing between them, the shorter hotel pages for The Darling and The Star Grand may help before you send a request.
The Darling: rooms, suites and the spa-facing stay
The Darling is described by the venue as “Sydney’s five star boutique hotel and urban resort”. The official hotel pages we could reach publish room categories, amenities and check-in details, but they do not publish a room count. A secondary source gives 171 rooms and suites, but because the hotel’s own reachable pages do not verify that figure, this review does not use it as a confirmed count.
The published categories at The Darling are The Darling Rooms, Jewel Suites, Adored Suites, Stellar Suites and Penthouses. The names are useful because they show the structure of the hotel’s accommodation without implying a view, floor or layout that is not stated here. If you want a particular feel, ask in plain terms: one of The Darling categories, a preference for a quieter position, a high floor if available, or a spa-focused stay. The desk can pass on a request, but it should not promise what the hotel has not confirmed.
Check-in is published as 3:00pm and check-out as 11:00am, with express check-out available. The Darling’s pool is a 25m outdoor pool on Level 5, open 8am–8pm daily and heated to 26 degrees. The Darling Gym is on Level 2 within the spa, open 24 hours daily, and under-16s are not permitted. That makes The Darling the more natural choice if the spa, gym and pool are central to the stay rather than incidental.
The hotel also publishes awards on its page: 2025 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best and 2025 Metropolitan Deluxe Hotel of the Year from Accommodation Australia NSW. Those are venue-published claims, not a substitute for matching the room category to your purpose. For a side-by-side look at all categories, see our rooms and suites guide.
The Star Grand: rooms, suites, residences and published gaps
The Star Grand is the larger-feeling hotel choice on the official pages, with categories that begin at Superior rooms and move through suites to penthouses. The hotel publishes “309 luxuriously appointed deluxe rooms, suites and penthouses”. The categories named on the reachable pages are Superior King Room, Superior Twin Room, Premium Suite, Royal Suites, Star Suites and Penthouses, with two penthouses noted.
Check-in and check-out match The Darling: 3:00pm check-in, 11:00am check-out and express check-out available. The Star Grand Gym and Pool are published as open from 6am–9pm daily on Level 5. The pool is described as harbour-view and heated to 26 degrees; under-16s must be accompanied. If you are travelling with a child, that accompaniment note matters more than the view language.
The wider Star Grand material also includes The Star Grand Residences. These are apartment-style suites, with published categories of One Bedroom Pyrmont Views With Office, One Bedroom Suite Harbour View, Two Bedroom Pyrmont or City View Suite, Two Bedroom Pyrmont View Entertainer Suite and Three Bedroom Darling Harbour View Suite. The total count for the residences is not stated on the pages we could reach.
The Star Grand page does not state a star rating, and the material we reached describes “newly designed” rooms without publishing a refurbishment date. That is the kind of gap worth naming. If your priority is a particular freshness of room, a high floor, or an apartment-style stay, ask the desk to seek confirmation rather than reading more into the category name than the hotel publishes.
The Darling Spa, pool and gym
The Darling Spa is on Level 2 of The Darling. The spa information in the facts available to us is marked low confidence because the pages conflict on hours, but it still gives a clear picture of the facilities published: 11 treatment rooms, two couples suites, a steam room, Darling Spa jacuzzi, boutique gym and a relaxation and tea lounge. The spa material also refers to the outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi on Level 5 for spa guests.
Hours vary by official page, so check directly with the spa before you build your day around a treatment time. One spa page gives Sun–Thu 10:00am–6:00pm and Fri–Sat 10:00am–7:00pm; the hotel page instead says 9:30am–7:00pm Mon–Sun. That inconsistency is not something to smooth over. If your stay depends on a late treatment, an early swim or a couples suite, confirm the details before the room is held.
The official spa booking page is at The Darling Spa booking. Our own The Darling Spa page keeps the planning simple: choose the hotel, choose the treatment window, then fit the pool and dinner around it. For the pool alone, our pool page separates The Darling’s published Level 5 pool from The Star Grand’s Level 5 gym and pool, because the access notes and hours are not the same.
For couples, The Darling Spa is the strongest reason to lean towards The Darling rather than The Star Grand. For a show night or a room-led stay, the balance may change. The right answer depends on how much of the weekend you want to spend in the room, at the spa, by the pool or moving between dinner and the theatre.
Restaurants and bars: useful choices without leaving the precinct
The Star Sydney publishes a substantial dining list, and the range is useful if you are planning a room stay around a treatment, a show or a late arrival. Signature Dining includes Sokyo, described as “Contemporary Japanese cuisine”, and BLACK Bar & Grill, described as “A classic steakhouse featuring wood-fired favourites”. Casual Dining includes Cucina Porto, with Italian “simple, honest Italian food”; Eat Ozzo at Harbourside on Pirrama Road, with no cuisine text published on the listing we have; Harvest Buffet on Level 1; Rumble on Level G, Harbourside; G&Tea; Fat Noodle; Food Quarter; 24/7 Sports Bar; and the café court.
Harvest Buffet is one of the few dining entries with detailed hours in the facts: breakfast 7–11am, lunch 12–3pm and dinner 5–10pm daily. Its published food notes include weekend seafood, carvery, pizza, pasta, curries and dessert bar. Rumble is described as “A modern contemporary take on South East Asian cuisine with a Thai influence”. Fat Noodle is described as “Fun, funky and aromatic Asian street food”. Food Quarter is listed as a casual café, and 24/7 Sports Bar lists pub favourites including burgers, wings and ribs.
The food court listing is broad and casual: Pyrmont Fish Co for sushi, sashimi, fish and chips; Mighty Bird for chicken; Double Chin Eats; Adanos Grill for kebabs and gözleme; Antidote for coffee and tea; Pulse Milk Bar; Gong Cha Tea and Hot Star Chicken; and Gelato Messina. This matters for stays where not every meal needs a reservation.
Bars are published in two groups. On the main gaming floor, the list includes 24/7 Sports Bar, Cherry with cocktails and city skyline views, Rock Lily with live music, and Jade Rabbit, described as “the new casino bar”. Restaurant bars are Black Bar, Sokyo Bar and G&Tea. For a fuller planning page, see our guides to the restaurants and bars.
Sydney Lyric, the Event Centre and a room upstairs
For show nights, The Star Sydney’s strongest practical advantage is proximity. Sydney Lyric is within The Star, at Pirrama Road, Pyrmont NSW 2009, overlooking Pyrmont Bay. The theatre opened in 1997 and publishes four seating configurations: 1350, 1500, 1750 and 2000 seats. The Ticketmaster box office is listed as open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and two hours before each show.
The Foundry Theatre is described as “An intimate theatre nestled within The Sydney Lyric”; no capacity is stated in the facts we have. If you are booking around a performance, keep the theatre ticketing separate from the room request. The room desk can help you think through the hotel choice and timing, but tickets remain with the theatre or official ticketing channels.
The Sydney Event Centre is also attached to the precinct at 80 Pyrmont Street. The Star material says the Event Centre is managed by Foundation Theatres and describes it as “convention, exhibition and event gala space”. Capacity is not published on the official pages we could reach. A secondary source describes a 3,000-seat Event Centre, and Wikipedia records a 29 Jan 2025 announcement that The Star would sell the Event Centre complex to Foundation Theatres for $60 million; because those details are secondary, they should be treated as context rather than hotel-published operational facts.
A room upstairs changes the pace of a show night. You can arrive by light rail, check in from the published 3:00pm time, have dinner within the precinct, attend the performance, then return without arranging a late trip across the city. Our Sydney Lyric theatre page keeps that sequence separate from spa weekends and general room stays.
The casino, stated plainly
The casino is part of The Star Sydney precinct, but this review treats it as a physical venue fact, not a reason to book a room. Australia bans online casino play under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, and this website does not provide casino access or wagering. The official casino pages list games including poker, baccarat, roulette, blackjack, craps and Pai Gow, and state that a Player Card is required to play at The Star Sydney. They also publish a dress standard requiring patrons to be dressed neat and tidy at all times.
The Star Sydney's casino licence remains suspended (since 2022). NICC (25 September 2026): the Minister amended the Casino Control Regulation 2019 to extend the term of the manager, Nick Weeks, until 30 June 2027; “Mr Weeks will continue to hold the casino licence for The Star Pty Limited ... allowing the casino to continue operating gaming facilities while its licence remains suspended.”
No casino opening hours were found on the Star Sydney pages fetched for this review; the former opening-hours page returned 404 in the facts supplied to us. Only the 24/7 Sports Bar is described as 24/7. Secondary material says the casino has two gaming floors, with the main floor on level one and the Sovereign Room on level three, but the fetched venue pages did not verify that structure as a current official fact.
If the regulatory position matters to your stay decision, read it as a governance fact rather than a hotel amenity. The hotels, restaurants, spa, pool, theatre and transport links can still be assessed on their own published information.
What the hotel publishes, and what it does not
A careful review is partly about resisting the temptation to fill gaps. The Star Sydney’s reachable official pages publish many useful facts: address, hotel names, room categories, check-in and check-out times, pool and gym hours, many restaurant names, several cuisine descriptions, parking entrances, the 2.0m car park height limit, and public transport notes. Those are enough to plan a stay with sensible questions.
Some details are not published, or not consistently published, on the pages we could reach. The Darling’s room count is not confirmed on an official page available to us; a secondary source gives 171 rooms and suites, but this review does not treat that as a verified hotel-published number. The Star Grand publishes 309 rooms, suites and penthouses, while The Star Grand Residences publish categories but not a total count. The Event Centre’s capacity is not published on the official pages we could reach. The spa hours conflict between official pages, so they should be checked directly.
The Star's own pages do not publish an airport distance or travel time; Sydney Airport's train and taxi figures are on our getting-there page. Locally, plan arrival by the transport the venue does publish: light rail to The Star, ferry to Pyrmont Bay Wharf, bus routes listed by the venue and theatre pages, or the published car park entries if you are driving.
Rates are another gap. The parking page publishes rates by 6-hour period, hotel-guest flat rate, daily maximum, motorbike flat rate and valet categories, but the figures are deliberately not copied into this review. Room prices are not included in the facts, so this page does not mention them. Ask for the dates and room category you want, then let the desk confirm what is actually available.
Verdict: who should ask for which stay
For couples, The Darling is the more natural first ask when the stay is about quiet time, a treatment, the Level 5 pool and a room category that feels separate from the busier parts of the precinct. Ask for The Darling Rooms, Jewel Suites, Adored Suites, Stellar Suites or Penthouses according to the space you want, then add any preference for timing around the spa. Do not assume a specific room count, view or floor unless it is confirmed.
For spa weekends, build the request around the spa first. Name The Darling Spa, give the treatment window you prefer, mention if you want a couples suite, and ask the desk to check the current hours because the official pages conflict. Then choose whether you want The Darling for proximity to the spa or The Star Grand if its room categories suit your budget and rhythm better.
For show nights, The Star Grand and The Darling can both work. The more important details are check-in from 3:00pm, dinner before the performance, the theatre time, and a late return to the room without leaving the precinct. If you are travelling in for Sydney Lyric, say so in the request. If you are attending an Event Centre function, be specific about the date and the event timing, because the official pages do not publish every operational detail a guest may need.
For families, The Star Grand’s published twin room category and its under-16 pool accompaniment note may be relevant. For longer stays, The Star Grand Residences categories are worth considering, especially where an office, two bedrooms or three bedrooms are named in the category itself. For a room-only city stay, the light rail, ferries and Darling Harbour setting may matter as much as the room type. See our page on Darling Harbour if you want the stay to include more walking than scheduling.
The fairest summary is this: The Star Sydney suits you when you want an address that collects sleep, spa, dinner, theatre and transport in one Pyrmont precinct. It is less suited to travellers who want every operational detail published before they ask. The request form is the right final step because it turns category names and timing preferences into a checkable enquiry.
