The Pyrmont Stay

Hotel guide

The Star Grand, read closely before you request a room

The Star Grand is the larger-feeling hotel choice at The Star Sydney, with rooms, suites and two penthouses published under its own hotel page. You come here for a Pyrmont base with restaurants, bars, the light rail and Darling Harbour close by, rather than for a retreat from the precinct.

Where The Star Grand sits within The Star Sydney

The Star Grand is one of the two hotels at The Star Sydney, 80 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont NSW 2009, Sydney, Australia. The other is The Darling, which has its own room categories and is also the address for The Darling Spa. The Star Grand is the more direct choice if you want to be inside the main complex, close to the restaurants, bars, Sydney Lyric theatre and the light rail stop.

The official hotel page names the property as The Star Grand and publishes its room and suite categories separately from The Darling. It also publishes a room-count line for The Star Grand: “309 luxuriously appointed deluxe rooms, suites and penthouses”. That is a venue-published figure for this hotel page. For The Star Sydney as a whole, and for some parts of the broader hotel-and-residence offer, the pages we could reach do not publish a single consolidated room count, so we do not add one.

The Star Sydney’s casino licence remains suspended (since 2022). NICC (25 September 2026): the Minister amended the Casino Control Regulation 2019 to extend the term of the manager, Nick Weeks, until 30 June 2027; “Mr Weeks will continue to hold the casino licence for The Star Pty Limited ... allowing the casino to continue operating gaming facilities while its licence remains suspended.”

This page is about the hotel stay. Australia bans online casino play, and this site does not provide or link to online gambling.

The published room categories

The Star Grand’s hotel page lists six categories: Superior King Room, Superior Twin Room, Premium Suite, Royal Suites, Star Suites and Penthouses, with two penthouses noted in the facts available to us. Those are the names to use when you make a request, because they match the hotel’s own published language.

The simplest distinction is between the Superior rooms and the suites. A Superior King Room suits a single traveller or a couple who mainly need the address, the bed type and access to the broader precinct. A Superior Twin Room is the clearer request for two people who prefer separate beds, subject to the hotel’s confirmation. If you need more sitting space, or if the stay is tied to a dinner, show night or longer weekend, the Premium Suite, Royal Suites or Star Suites are the categories to name.

The hotel also publishes Penthouses as a category. The facts available to us note two penthouses, but we do not infer layouts, views, inclusions or private facilities unless the hotel confirms them for your dates. If a penthouse is what you want, ask plainly for that category and include the number of adults, the purpose of the stay and any timing that matters.

If you are comparing both hotels before deciding, the broader rooms and suites page sets the published categories from The Darling and The Star Grand side by side. It is useful when you know the address is right, but not yet the hotel.

Check-in, check-out and what to ask for

The Star Grand publishes check-in from 3:00pm and check-out at 11:00am. Express check-out is available. Those times give you the frame for planning a short Sydney stay: arrive after lunch, leave luggage timing to be confirmed by the hotel, and do not build a firm early-room plan unless the hotel agrees to it.

When you send a request, use the exact room category if you know it. Add your dates, number of adults, preferred bed type and any broad preference such as a higher floor or harbour side. The hotel may be able to note a preference, but a request is not the same as a guarantee. That is why this site keeps the wording careful rather than promising a particular outlook or level.

The Star Grand Hotel and Residences are also published separately in the available facts. The residence categories are apartment-style suites: One Bedroom Pyrmont Views With Office, One Bedroom Suite Harbour View, Two Bedroom Pyrmont or City View Suite, Two Bedroom Pyrmont View Entertainer Suite, and Three Bedroom Darling Harbour View Suite. Their check-in and check-out times are also 3:00pm and 11:00am. The total count for the residences is not stated on the pages we could reach.

If your stay needs apartment-style space, say so at the request stage. If you want the hotel rather than the residences, name The Star Grand and one of its six hotel categories.

Pool, gym and spa access in the precinct

The Star Grand publishes a harbour-view pool on Level 5, heated to 26 degrees. The Star Grand Gym and Pool is open from 6am – 9pm daily, according to the hotel’s published information. Under-16s must be accompanied. That makes the pool an easy part of a morning or late-afternoon stay, but it is still sensible to check current access when your room is confirmed.

The Darling also has a Level 5 pool, separately published as a 25m outdoor pool open 8am–8pm daily and heated to 26 degrees. Because the two hotels sit within the same precinct, it is easy to blur their facilities when reading quickly. For The Star Grand, keep to the wording above: harbour-view pool, Level 5, 6am – 9pm daily, with the under-16 accompaniment note.

The spa is not inside The Star Grand. The Darling Spa is on Level 2 of The Darling and is published with 11 treatment rooms, two couples suites, a steam room, Darling Spa jacuzzi, boutique gym and relaxation/tea lounge. Its official pages give conflicting hours, so hours vary and you should check directly with the spa before you shape a day around a treatment. Spa booking should be made through the official site: The Darling Spa booking page.

Food, bars and nights in Pyrmont

The Star Grand suits you if you want dinner, a bar, a theatre night or a harbour walk close to the lift. The published dining list for The Star Sydney includes Sokyo for contemporary Japanese cuisine, BLACK Bar & Grill as a classic steakhouse featuring wood-fired favourites, Cucina Porto for simple, honest Italian food, Harvest Buffet on Level 1, Rumble on Level G Harbourside, and several casual venues and food-court names. The restaurants page keeps those names and cuisine notes in one place.

For bars, the published list includes 24/7 Sports Bar, Cherry, Rock Lily and Jade Rabbit on the main gaming floor, plus Black Bar, Sokyo Bar and G&Tea among restaurant bars. We describe them factually on the bars page, without adding hours unless the venue publishes them.

The Sydney Lyric is also within The Star precinct, overlooking Pyrmont Bay. Its published seating configurations are 1350, 1500, 1750 and 2000 seats. If your stay is built around a performance, The Star Grand is a practical room request because you can keep dinner, the theatre and the room within the same address. For more detail, use the separate Sydney Lyric theatre guide.

Getting there, and who The Star Grand suits

The Star Grand works best when you want a contained Pyrmont stay rather than a small-hotel mood. The L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line stops at The Star, and the route runs from Central Station via Darling Harbour to The Star, seven days. The F4 Pyrmont Bay service stops at Pyrmont Bay Wharf, described by Sydney Lyric as a five-minute walk. Car park entrances are published at Main Entrance 55 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont, and Members Entrance 2 Edward Street, Pyrmont, with no parking for vehicles over 2.0m.

Choose The Star Grand if your priorities are room category choice, late dinners, a show night, quick access to the Level 5 pool and an easy link to Darling Harbour. It is also a sensible request for guests who want twin bedding, because Superior Twin Room is one of the published categories.

Think more carefully if your main reason for staying is a spa retreat. You can still plan treatments at The Darling Spa, but the spa belongs to The Darling side of the precinct, not to The Star Grand. If the room is secondary and the treatment schedule is central, compare The Star Grand with The Darling before you decide.

For booking, you can use the official hotel hub at The Star Grand official page, or send a request here if you want the category, dates and spa timing checked before you commit.
